🌳 National Arbor Week South Africa (1–7 September)
National Arbor Week in South Africa is celebrated every year from 01 to 07 September — a time dedicated to promoting tree planting, indigenous tree awareness, and environmental conservation across the country.
Originally observed as Arbor Day in 1983, the initiative was expanded in 1999 by the South African government into a full week to encourage greater public participation in greening and environmental stewardship.
🌿 Why Arbor Week Matters
Trees are vital to our environment and communities. They:
-
Improve air quality and support biodiversity
-
Provide shade, windbreaks, and temperature control
-
Prevent soil erosion and improve water quality
-
Offer natural resources such as food, medicines, and timber
-
Enhance property value and landscape beauty
-
Support mental well-being and community pride
During National Arbor Week, schools, homes, businesses, and municipalities are encouraged to plant indigenous trees, participate in greening projects, and help build a healthier, more sustainable South Africa.
🌱 Trees of the Year 2025 (South Africa)
Each year, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) selects “Trees of the Year” to highlight indigenous species and encourage their planting.
Trees of the Year for September 2025:
| Scientific Name | Common Name |
|---|---|
| Sideroxylon inerme subsp. inerme | White Milkwood |
| Mimusops caffra | Red Milkwood |
| Spirostachys africana | Tamboti |
These trees play an important role in South Africa’s natural heritage and biodiversity.
