Whether you envision a sleek modern lap pool, a natural rock-style feature, or a luxury designer pool with integrated spas and waterfalls, we build it to your exact specifications — with precision, quality, and durability at the core.
Our concrete pools are engineered for strength and longevity, using industry-leading construction methods and premium materials to ensure lasting structural integrity and a stunning finish that stands the test of time.
Minimum Construction Specifications
Gunite or Hand-Packed Concrete Domestic Pools (Standard Conditions)
Our pools are built in accordance with minimum industry standards and best-practice engineering requirements for:
-
Excavation & soil preparation
-
Reinforced steel frameworks
-
Gunite or hand-packed concrete shells
-
High-quality waterproofing systems
-
Durable surface finishes (marbelite, tiles, etc.)
-
Professional plumbing & circulation systems
-
Efficient filtration & sanitation equipment
These specifications ensure maximum strength, water retention, and long-term performance in normal soil and ground-water conditions.
REINFORCING FOR GUNITE POOLS
MINIMUM REINFORCING SPECIFICATIONS
1. A single layer of reference 156 or 200 high tensile steel fabric.
2. An additional layer of steel fabric referred to in para 1 for cove which must overlap 1 metre both sides.
3. 4 x Y10 high tensile bars in ring beam spaced 100 mm and to be continuous or 2 x Y10 bars with double reinforcing or steel fabric
ALTERNATIVE METHOD
R8 rods placed throughout the pool at 200 mm centres tied at each intersection.
Note:
For both methods as stipulated above, it would mean that approximately 2.8kg steel is to be used per 1 meter square.
REINFORCING FOR HAND PACKED POOLS
1. Approximately 4kg of steel reinforcing bars per one meter square.
2. The steel ring beam to be continuous.
GUNITING
1. The standard mix shall comprise 1 part of Portland cement and 4 parts of course, sharp, well graded river sand. The aggregate shall be clean and free from organic impurities; the maximum size of particles not to exceed 10 mm.
2. Gauge boxes may be used when mixing on site or alternatively ready mixed with a guarantee by the supplier of 4 : 1 mix, or
3. 2 Pockets of Portland cement to 5 level concrete wheelbarrows of gunite sand – aggregate 7 mm.
4. Average thickness of gunite to be 100 mm.
5. The gunite shall be applied at a pressure of not less than 3 bars and the distance of the nozzle from the gunite surface shall be between 900 m and 1200 mm to ensure sufficient compaction of the gunite.
6. The gunite shall be initially applied to the floor of the swimming pool, to cove and sides up to a height of approximately 300 mm from the bottom, until the reinforcement has been covered. The balance of the sides and coves shall then be shot. All rebound shall be swept and discarded. Excessive application of gunite forming lumps or irregularity shall be removed.
7. When necessary, prior to gunite, the soil floor to be compacted.
8. Reinforcing steel/mesh must be raised to ensure coverage on both sides by the concrete mix.
Material Strength — Hand-Packed Concrete Pool Shell
Our hand-packed concrete pools are constructed to strict engineering standards to ensure superior durability and long-term structural performance. Specifications include:
-
Concrete Mix:
Double-washed river sand and Portland cement blended with aggregate (minimum aggregate size 13 mm). -
Concrete Thickness:
Average shell thickness of 150 mm. -
Concrete Strength:
Achieves a minimum compressive strength of 30 MPa at 28 days. -
Mixing Requirements:
If concrete is mixed on-site, a calibrated cement mixer must be used to ensure consistency and structural integrity. -
Placement Time:
Concrete must be placed in situ within 3 hours of adding water to the mix to maintain strength and workability. -
Ring Beam Specification:
Reinforced concrete ring-beam measuring 300 mm × 150 mm for added structural support.
Electrical
All electrical work will be carried out to the highest safety standards and in accordance with regulatory requirements.
-
Time Switch:
A time switch will be installed to automate filtration cycles and improve energy efficiency. -
Cabling:
Standard cabling required for the installation is included.
Any additional cable beyond the contracted allowance will be charged separately. -
Compliance:
All wiring and electrical installations will be completed in full compliance with local authority regulations and/or Eskom requirements.
Curing Period — Hand-Packed / Gunite Shell
To ensure proper curing and maximum structural strength, the pool shell must be kept moist during the initial curing phase.
-
Curing Requirement:
For the first five (5) days following completion of the shell, the owner must water the shell intermittently each day to maintain moisture and prevent premature drying or cracking.
Coping & Paving
To ensure long-term structural stability and prevent surface cracking, proper expansion joint installation is required during paving works.
-
Expansion Joint Requirement:
An expansion joint must be installed when:-
Paving exceeds 1 metre in width, or
-
Paving adjoins any existing wall or rigid structure.
-
-
Joint Material & Depth:
The expansion joint must be filled with an approved expansion joint compound and must extend to the full depth of the coping tile thickness for proper flexibility and movement absorption.
Mosaic or Similar Tile Finish
A decorative waterline tile band will be installed to enhance durability and appearance.
-
Waterline Tile Installation:
Mosaic or similar approved tiles will be fitted at the waterline, with a standard width of approximately 150 mm to provide a durable and attractive finish that resists staining and water marks.
Paving Surround
To ensure long-term stability and prevent settlement or movement, proper ground preparation is required before paving is installed.
-
Ground Compaction:
The ground must be thoroughly compacted in 150 mm layers, or suitable piling must be provided where necessary.
Pump / Motor & Filter
The filtration system will be selected and installed to ensure optimal water circulation and clarity.
-
Equipment Sizing:
Pump, motor, and filter sizes will be determined in accordance with the pool size and the manufacturer’s specifications to ensure efficient and reliable performance.
Piping & Fittings
All plumbing materials will be selected and installed to ensure strong water flow and long-term leak-free performance.
-
Piping Specification:
All pool piping shall be Class 6 pressure-rated. -
Pipe Diameter:
-
50 mm O.D. (outer diameter) when rigid PVC pipe is used
-
50 mm I.D. (inner diameter) when polythene pipe is used
-
These specifications ensure adequate water circulation, durability, and resistance to pressure fluctuations.
Final Interior Finish
For marble plaster finishes, the interior surface will be hand-applied and precision-finished to ensure a smooth, durable, and visually consistent surface.
-
Application Method:
Marble plaster shall be applied using a steel trowel to achieve an even, uniform finish. -
Thickness Requirement:
The finished plaster layer shall have a minimum average thickness of 6 mm. -
Material Quality:
Marble plaster must consist of an approved mix meeting industry quality standards for strength, durability, and colour consistency.
Hand-Over
Upon completion of the pool, a formal hand-over must take place during daylight hours to allow full inspection of the pool and finishes.
-
Owner Instruction:
At hand-over, the pool owner should be provided with guidance on correct pool operation and maintenance procedures to ensure proper care and long-term performance.
